Everybody loves cakes, especially Sydney children’s cakes by premium bakers like Black Velvet Cakes. These simple desserts are the centrepiece of any celebration, and they evoke feelings of togetherness, happiness, and festivity.
Most of us think nothing of it, but cakes have a long history and a lot of stories to tell. In this post, we’ll dive into some of the most fun and interesting facts about cakes that your kids will love to learn!
The history of cakes dates back to ancient times, and these first cakes were very different from what we know them to be today. The earliest versions of this dessert were flat, compact discs of grains that were dried and put together.
Later on, they became more bread-like and sweetened with honey, and would occasionally have nuts or dried fruits. In the mid-19th century, bakers stopped using years in cakes, replacing the ingredient with baking powder and baking soda, which turned out to be more effective raising agents (and are still used today!).
In the 17th century, birthday cakes became popular as gifts given to people who were celebrating turning another year older–but these decadent creations were only reserved for the upper class as ingredients like sugar were incredibly expensive at the time.
Imagine not being able to have a kid’s chocolate birthday cakeunless you were royalty! It wasn’t until the 18th century that it became available to the masses.
Royal icing is a simple icing made from softly beaten egg whites, icing sugar, and sometimes lemon juice. So, why is it royal? This cake staple was recognized as “royal” after it was used to coat and decorate Queen Victoria’s wedding cake in 1840–this cake became the first to have pure white icing on it.
Create a sophisticated photo album that captures the essence of your loved one's most cherished memories. Consider a skilled artisan or a bespoke bookbinding service to create a stunning, handcrafted leather or linen-bound album.
You can customise the cover with embossed or gold-leaf detailing, such as your loved one’s name or a significant date, to transform the album into a one-of-a-kind keepsake.
Just make sure to fill the album with carefully selected pictures, ensuring that each image evokes a special moment and watch the recipient's eyes light up as they receive their gift.
German chocolate cake, a layered chocolate-flavoured cake filled and topped with coconut-pecan frosting, has no connections to Germany at all. The cake is American-made.
Its history starts with Samuel German, who made a type of dark baking chocolate for the Bakery’s Chocolate Company in 1852. 105 years later, a home-baker named Mrs. George Clay used this chocolate to create the German Chocolate Cake we know today.
General Foods, which owned the Bakery’s brand then, circulated the recipe as “German’s Chocolate Cake,” but the possessive was dropped in later publications. Now, the US celebrates National German Chocolate Cake Day every June 11th.
The tallest cake measured thirty-three metres high. It was made by Hakasima-Nilasari Culinary School for a Christmas event, and it was displayed in Senayan City in Jakarta, Indonesia from late November to early December in 2008.
The world’s most expensive cake was the Runway Cake, designed by prominent cake maker Debbie Wingham. The cake was commissioned for a birthday and was designed to look like a fashion runway. It was 1.8 metres long, adorned with edible model figures wearing fashionable clothes and accessories. What made the cake expensive was the abundance of gemstones added, which included $45 million worth of multi-coloured diamonds.
National Cake Day is celebrated every 26th of November. It’s a fun time for many cake enthusiasts and bakers, and many bakeshops offer good discounts and host fun events for the celebration!
